About this poster
Image taken from a 1913 woodcut by artist Edmund Sullivan, originally done to illustrate the 26th quatrain of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, this block print underscores the verse "The Flower that once has blown for ever dies."
The artist later released Skeleton and Roses, an art print featuring a similar design.
The roses and ribbons are almost maroon colored red, noticeably darker than on any of the earlier printings. A more consistent medium blue was substituted for the dot pattern screened blue in the background of the skeleton on the earlier printings. The Bindweed Press credit present on the authorized Family Dog printings has been substituted by the credit “© 1977 Kelley/Mouse Portal Publications Ltd, Corte Madera. California 94925” in the lower right corner. FD-26-RP-7 does share one of the four printing flaws in common on all three Bindweed Press printings, the “split petal” - the red ink on the rose petal just to the left of the center of the skeleton’s sternum covers only the top 2/3 of the petal, with unprinted white on the bottom tip. The other three flaws are the “crescent”, the “blue blob” and the “scratch”.
